Cube Study with Color Gradations is a compact yet deeply resonant sketch on paper showing experiments with geometry, perception, and the subtle power of color transitions. Initially, the composition appears to present a simple “cube study” but, as the title denotes, it is not just an exercise in form. The emphasis is on how nuanced gradations of hue can elevate a piece into a reflection on spatial ambiguity, visual rhythm, and the interplay between structure and sensation. The inspiration for this medley of three blue circles was a cup and saucer. Its design is accentuated by the way the textured paint evokes clay structures. How the shades of blue and white come together perceptually adds a spatial depth that teases the viewer’s experience of it. Continue reading “Study: 3 Blue Circles with Texture”

Like Pandemic Study #1, this evocative oil painting explores the interplay between darkness and illumination through a monochromatic palette. Using black and white only, the painting demonstrates how these contrasting values can generate an almost chromatic luminosity despite the absence of color. The composition investigates the optical phenomenon whereby white light contains the full visible spectrum, while challenging conventional notions of black as merely the absence of light. Slight shifts in hue and value suggest land, distance and atmosphere. The work’s restraint and limited palette place the emphasis on perception, tone, and spatial ambiguity rather than narrative or detailed representation. Green evokes fertile landscapes and the fragility of natural environments.
