Pandemic Value Study #2

Pandemic Value Study #2 (2020)

Like Pandemic Study #1, this  evocative oil painting explores the interplay between darkness and illumination through a monochromatic palette. Using black and white only, the painting demonstrates how these contrasting values can generate an almost chromatic luminosity despite the absence of color. The composition investigates the optical phenomenon whereby white light contains the full visible spectrum, while challenging conventional notions of black as merely the absence of light.

Created during 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the work reflects on the dualities that defined the pandemic era—isolation and connection, absence and presence, shadow and radiance. The title references both its creation during this historic moment and its formal investigation of tonal values. Through careful manipulation of light and dark, the painting achieves a visual tension that invites contemplation on how opposing values can produce unexpected vibrancy.

The study represents my ongoing interest in the intersection of art, perception, and the scientific understanding of visual phenomena. By restricting my palette, this painting reveals the expressive potential inherent in value alone.
