This large-scale oil painting speaks to a mastery of layered composition and chromatic complexity developed over time. The substantial dimensions of the canvas provide an immersive visual experience, while the layering creates both depth and movement across the picture plane.
The work’s perceptual dynamics emerge through carefully built-up surfaces that reveal the painting process itself. Multiple translucent and opaque layers interact to produce a fluid, ever-shifting visual field that responds to changing light conditions and viewing angles. This technique allows colors and forms to resonate with one another, creating spatial ambiguities that draw viewers into sustained engagement with the work.
The title refers to South Africa, but does not provide any specific reference to it. Rather, the abstract approach transforms this landscape into more of a meditation on color, space, and perception allowing viewers to conceptualize their own correlations with the named country. Indirectly the painting alludes to the current belief that South Africa is experiencing global warming at a rate nearly double the global average, leading to increased temperatures and more extreme weather events.
Overall, this artwork offers a later example of my ongoing investigation into how layered applications of paint can generate optical experiences that transcend their material origins. It invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between what is seen, how we perceive reality, and the imaginary.
