Reflections on Water #2 continues the perceptual inquiry begun in 1991 with the Reflections on Water #1 and the 1992 Reflections on Water #2 paintings. The earlier paintings emphasized transparency, overlay, and compositional variation using water-based paints and an airbrush. This rendition used oil paint and a wood panel.
Oil creates a different resonance, and using a gessoed wood panel provides a foundation than has a texture unlike the grain of paper. Yet, here too, the paint evokes the luminous effects of water’s shifting reflections.
Looking at the three interpretations together demonstrates how surface and technique alter perceptual outcomes, demonstrating that luminosity is achievable in a variety of ways. All underscore my sustained interest in the intersection of material, perception, visual cognition, a fascination with technique, and how surface and media choices shape both process and perceptual outcomes.
