Rainy Day Monday (2025)

Rainy Day Monday is a small, compact painting created with both oil and ink. This combination juxtaposes some measure of painterly richness (from the oil) with sharper, linear, and tighter elements (from the ink). Perceptually, interweaving the media this way offers a surface with textural contrast; it is one in which boarder color fields play against the fine detail.

The title of this painting steers the viewer to think about a rainy day, but the background pink, orange, and vibrant blue tells the viewer that the work is not referencing a gloomy day. Similarly, the fluidity of the shapes adds a rhythm that communicates this painting isn’t suggesting a mood of melancholy; rather the connotation is the freshness of rain. In particular, this compact painting evokes the fresh, earthy scent that follows a rainstorm.
