Although black, white and shades of grey, this painting was inspired by Josef Albers’ studies of color relationships, thus the name: Homage to Josef Albers.
Albers (1888-1976), a German-born American artist and educator who is considered one of the most influential 20th-century art teachers in the United States.
It is one of my black-and-white pandemic paintings, composed during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. These paintings were constructed using only black, white, and shades of gray. Essentially, they center around the concept that white light comprises all hues on the visible light spectrum. Many consider black to be a color because you combine other pigments to create it on paper. Yet, properly combined black and white can evoke a sense of light. This tension between dark and light is accentuated in this study.
