The pattern of this compact drawing was created by using astrological signs and planetary symbols to form a musical configuration. Different size pen widths add a perceptual vibrancy and vitality to the black-and-white arrangement.
The black-and-white version of this piece was published in 1989 in Tjotjok, a book in which my illustrations were juxtaposed with 86 poems by Jerry Bass.
Both the oil and ink paintings measures 18×12 inches. Both are unframed. The oil painting is on a gessoed panel, with some gesso evident on edges and back.
The early sketches for Libra on this page demonstrate how some of my early black-and-white pieces were developed and how I used Koh-i-noor technical pens in sketching them out. These Koh-i-Nor technical pens produce lines in a range of line widths, as shown in the chart that accompanies this entry. They helped guide the perceptual visualization process that aimed to portray a musical dynamic.
Lovebirds (1987) is a finely balanced ink drawing that captures the intimacy and symmetry of paired forms. Executed with crisp line work and subtle geometric interplay, the composition evokes both natural grace and abstract rhythm.
