Alchemical Rendering #1 (1981)

Ink Painting
Alchemical Rendering, 1981

Alchemical Rending is an evocative composition that explores the intersection of geometry, symbolism, and perceptual inquiry through a tightly composed and meticulously executed ink drawing. The work features a central circular form layered with radial lines, checkerboard textures, and a pyramid-like structure, surrounded by concentric ellipses and rectilinear segments. This central motif is reminiscent of an alchemical diagram, thus the name. Here the central form serves to anchor the composition in a space where perception, pattern, and meaning interlace.

Overall, the elements that comprise this small work suggest a synthesis of visualization, architectural logic, and metaphysical resonance. These themes, often found in the artist’s early work, echo an interest she began to develop early in her career, one centered on how visualization and composition work hand-in-hand. While this non-representational work has an underlying philosophical narrative, later work would focus more on the perceptual visualization than philosophical inquiry and/or narrative. Therefore, like all work from this period, Alchemical Rendering was instrumental in the artist’s process of developing her unique perceptual, visual syntax.

Also noteworthy is the degree to which the title, Alchemical Rendering, gestures toward the idea of process, a key theme throughout the artist’s oeuvre. In other words, in this work the use of “alchemical” is not only describing the artist’s process, but it is also showing how it renders an image through line and form.
