Faces (Drawing on Painted Paper), 1981

Faces. Faces (Drawing on Painted Paper by Amy Ione, Framed)
Faces, 1981

Faces captures the fleeting essence of human expression. The ink lines, at once delicate and assertive, animate the painted paper with a chorus of gazes. Each face is distinct, yet together they form a collective portrait that speaks to our shared humanity and the variety of expressions we wear. Thus, the work invites viewers to consider what identity is and how the act of looking connects us–and connects the artist with her work.

Created in 1981, the drawing also reflects a period of experimentation, with the artist grappling with the immediacy of mark-making, the limitations of black and white ink drawings, and the expressive potential of using painted paper as an alternative to drawing with ink on a white surface.
