A small painting in the artist’s perceptual studies series of paintings.
Like Flags and Freedom, this work was inspired by all the people in Berkeley, California waving flags on street corners after Joe Biden won the 2020 election in the United States.
As a symbolic flag, this painting fits within a longer tradition.
The canvas sketch measures 12x9x.5 inches. It is unframed with partially painted sides and presents varying sized pink and purple diamonds, with various circles inside floating over a diagonal bar with a mixture of teal, black, and white. Incised lines in the back ground.
The unsigned paper sketch, on heavy acrylic paper, has three rows of diamonds and five columns on top of them on airbrushed paper. The shapes of the diamonds vary, and they are attached to one another, with circles and ellipses inside each. The archival acrylic paper measures 11.5×9 inches.

The inspiration for this medley of three blue circles was a cup and saucer. Its design is accentuated by the way the textured paint evokes clay structures. How the shades of blue and white come together perceptually adds a spatial depth that teases the viewer’s experience of it.

Slight shifts in hue and value suggest land, distance and atmosphere. The work’s restraint and limited palette place the emphasis on perception, tone, and spatial ambiguity rather than narrative or detailed representation. Green evokes fertile landscapes and the fragility of natural environments.

Homage to Sol LeWitt (2015) offers an homage to Sol LeWitt’s legacy of conceptual rigor and geometric clarity. The interplay of oil and pencil creates a dialogue between painterly mark making and linear precision, echoing LeWitt’s investigations of structure while asserting my own interest in perception, the power of visual syntax, and artistic process.
