Astrology Series (1981-1985)

Ink drawing of Capricorn on paper
Capricorn (1984)

The astrology series used each astrological symbol as a design starting point and the symbol of its ruling planet as a design counterpoint. The series was developed between 1981 and 1985.

The sketch of Libra available here shows how the pieces were developed. The numbers correspond to the number used for technical pens that designate the different line widths of the various pens. Using the way different line widths also register differently perceptually, the pen variations were used like notes in a musical composition to calibrate a perceptual rhythm.

In essence, the differing line widths provided a means to add perceptual depth, vibrancy, and musicality to the piece. Unfortunately, this type of detail does not come through in reproductions because the images reduce the size and make images appear flatter.

As the series developed, the density of the black and white details began to seem overbearing. One result was that the later pieces in the series started to come together more holistically. Another result was that the yearning for color began to move the work in a different direction. The creation of small color pieces while working on the large black-and-white pieces freed things up a bit stylistically. The move toward oil also happened at this time.

Lost pieces: Gemini, Leo Rising, Libra, and Aquarius.
Sold and lost: Sagittarius and Scorpio.

A color version of Libra exists. It is not part of this black-and-white series and is still pretty dense. The small Capricorn watercolor is one of the few color images from this time that are still around.

Pisces is in a private collection.
